When Gravity Fails

Picked this one from a bookclub friend's TBR and it was a good one! A mix of those film noir movies and Mickey Spillane, first-person, who dunnits, with a dash of Altered Carbon's uncertainty as to who you're actually meeting. I don't usually like the who dunnits as some are really easy to figure out and I'm not fond of murders as the base for a story. This did have some gruesomeness but it definitely did not give things away too soon.

The man who loved books too much

Wrote a review for

I got the wrong impression from the title of this book. I thought it would be a biography about a "man" but it was more about the author's experience with a particular book, a bit about a "man," and a bit about people and their book obsessions. Because I came in with a particular mindset, I wasn't really pulled in by the author's experiences and ended up returning the book unfinished.

Blind Man's Bluff: The Untold Story of American Submarine Espionage

Wrote a review for

Four Doors

  • Story - 5 of 5 - This book is all about the story. Granted you'll want to come with a preexisting interest in submarines and / or technology to enjoy it. I enjoyed the book because I enjoy both topics. This book is the story of the creation of submarines and the technology advancements made in and for them, to solve issues and demands, across time.
  • Character - 4 of 5 - Alot of the book is the story of individuals that create and / or use the technologies. The authors do a great job of giving a quick background of each individual to give the reader a sense of why the individuals are in the book (creator or user) and their skills, without too much slowing down of the storyline.
  • Setting - 3 of 5 - The world building is not the focus of this book, what's here is just enough to convey the driving forces behind the advancements of submarines and technology.
  • Language - 3 of 5 - The authors did a great job of holding back the tide of technical jargon that could have gone into a book such as this one, which would make this door a 5. Instead the emphasis is on the story and characters, yet giving enough technical language for a tech-savvy reader to follow along. They also fully qualifying acronyms rather than make you guess. All this results in a door of 3.

Cascade Failure

Four Doors

  • Story - 5 of 5 - Interesting story that moves along nicely, no going off on tangents or coming to a stand-still.
  • Character - 5 of 5 - Interesting, detailed, unique characters that one can root for or jeer.
  • Setting - 3 of 5 - Just enough detail for the characters to move around in without tangenting or slowing the story and momentum down. Giving a 3 because worldbuilding is not the emphasis of this book. There is just the right amount to support the story and characters.
  • Language - 4 of 5 - alot of description, no stuffy language usage, no language intended to incite strong negative emotions or give wrong impressions. I give it a 4 because there are some authors that have a knack for choosing words that bring out the colors and textures of the scene like a soft mist or warm fuzzy blanket. Again, not the door being emphasized in this book but still does a great job.
