Whilst I enjoyed reading this book, for me, it wasn't a 5* read. The plot is straightforward and the good characters are very likeable and the bad ones not so much it almost feels a bit formulaic. There weren't any plot twists and you usually knew what was going to happen before it did. Having said all that I do like the characters and the story and did enjoy reading the book, I just felt it wasn't as gripping as it could have been and was missing something.
I will read the next installment as I've bought it but not sure about continuing the series.
I love Jodi Taylor books and for 3/4 of this book really enjoyed the story and the characters and their wonderful interaction.
But, despite having a pretty good idea of how it would all end, I was quite disappointedin the final resolution. It wasn't so much the way it got resolved, but more the telling of it and the dialog. I felt the whole books vibe completely changed almost into a Carry on Film.
It felt like two completely different styles of writing.
But, I would read the next installment and I did overall enjoy it. It lost a star for this final part.
For me this was a book of two halves, the first was fun lively and interesting with some great scenes and dialog especially with Robert and Lucy, the second almost seemed to be written by a different author and was clunky and forced with some really poor dialog and weird scenes which didn't feel believable. It's a fun story and I enjoyed it, but it was a 5 star first half and 2 star second.
Not bad but also not brilliant (!) Wilf, Donna d Sylvia seemed to be just about spot on, but I felt the doctor didn't really capture the David Tennant Doctor properly. It also felt a bit like the Doctor didn't actually do much to stop the threat either. I did enjoy it though, but felt it could have been better.
The main characters relationships were fun to see develop and the plot was good, but I felt toward the end the behaviour of the bad guys suddenly changed too obviously to make them easily identifiable as bad. I got this book free on an offer and its not the type of book I would normally read. Would I read the next one? Perhaps.
I really had to make myself read this as it just didn't sound my cup of tea. But Jasper Fforde could make the phone book a riveting and unpredictable unputdownable book. The man is a genius. I thoroughly enjoyed this very odd book set in a strange but familiar world. The characters were a mixed bunch of likeable, evil and just middle of the road and there so many of them at times I got a bit confused. But I'd highly recommend this and hope that the sequel does eventually come out, though this book does stand alone well.
I propose that Jodi Taylor be locked in her room with copious supplies of food and drink and a PC and never let our so she can keep turning out St Mary's books as I cannot stand the wait between them!
This series is brilliantly written, the humour is very British and the characters a great mix of types and talents. You fall in love with them and opening a new book in the series gives me butterfly's I'm so looking forward to reading it!
I haven't enjoyed an authors work this much since Terry Pratchett.
Interesting plot and use of famous characters but this book is soooo long. I felt it could do with a lot less of characters in head conversations. Do we really need to know that a character wonders what's in a bag someone has just produced and doesn't know? Surely as they open the bag a second later we could live without that bit.
I'm afraid the ending left me seriously underwhelmed too. The final confrontation was anti climatic and just far too easy. The characters even remarked on this and you were left thinking another twist was about to materialise but it didn't.
Will I read part 3? Well I could I or I couldn't I just don't know yet he thought in his head....
