I really like Hur's historical mysteries. She does such a great job of building the historical world in a way that you feel like you can understand it even if it is an era/place you don't know anything about. Plus, a good whodunnit! This one had the addition of a sweet, yearning romance which was super cute.
Vo is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. Her writing is so beautiful and dangerous. I loved the world of this old Hollywood tale with all of the mysteries and deals and dark magic. If your is someone who likes to have everything explained - do people actually become stars? do they get their names back? Are the studio heads legit demons?! - then this might not be for you. But if you want a gorgeous atmospheric tale, then pick this up!!
I definitely thought this was going to be a book about putting your phone down and doing hobbies/self-care. That's only a small portion of it. It's about so much more: noticing and listening to the environment, questioning the status quo of productivity and “hustle culture,” and challenging systems of oppression and power. I read this at an interesting time having finished Braiding Sweetgrass a month or so ago - the author talks a lot about the book - and watching Everything, Everywhere All at Once. These three pieces work so well together and have given me a lot to think about meaning and value.
I loved it so much and recommend it to anyone who is a human.
Beautiful, devastating, and somehow ultimately hopeful. All the characters were so perfectly created and I loved them all. I will fight anyone who hurts Katrina Nguyen!
Also, you MUST listen to the Bartok sonata at the end. It's absolutely essential to the understanding of the book.
I think one of the best books I've read this year and I'm going to be hounding everyone to read it.
I've heard about this book for a while and finally decided to read it because it's on the summer reading list for the high school in the town where I work. I LOVED it. I can understand how the author got so emotionally attached to these wonderful creatures because I also did by just reading along!
A great read for anyone who loves animals and suspects that they are a lot smarter than we think they are.
Beautifully written and heartbreaking. A stark example of all the things that conservatives/fascists are doing now are the same things that Communism did in the past: control over women's bodies, asking friends and family to spy on each other, hoarding wealth, etc. And yet democratic socialism is the enemy...hmmmm.
