I had missed this one completely, but then it went on to win the Tähtivaeltaja award, so I had to read it. Verdict? Fascinating, but kind of hard to read, thus just three stars. I'm willing to plead stupidity: this book is probably for smarter people than I am, and I probably missed a ton of fascinating metaphors. But at times, the worlds Schulz create were simply amazing, and I don't wonder why this was awarded, especially as the translation is solid.

Entertaining, with some clever ideas about debt and interstellar finance.

Ella ja kaverit kuulevat Kojoottikoulusta, joka kuulostaa paljon tavallista koulua hauskemmalta paikalta. Sinne siis! Karkumatka osoittautuu kuitenkin hieman hankalaksi ja kun Ella kavereineen törmää mystiseen taikurin Papadamiin ja käy ilmi, että Opettaja on vaarassa, karkumatka unohtuu ja alkaa huikea pelastusoperaatio.

Takuuvarmaa Ella-huumoria.

Hauska Ragnarök-tarina. Selvästi helppolukuisempi kuin edellinen lukemani tulkinta, AS Byattin [b:Ragnarok 11020173 Ragnarok A.S. Byatt https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1307571650s/11020173.jpg 15939516]. Aika nuortenkirjamainenhan tämä suoraviivaisuudessaan oli, mutta ihan viihdyttävä kyllä, kun Ragnarökin käänteet avautuivat vähän kerrassaan. Mukavan nopealukuinen.

Ei toisaalta Villimmän Pohjolan veroinen, mutta toisaalta paikoin jopa hauskempi. Paikoin tuskallisen viiltävää satiiria journalismin nykytilasta ja maailmanmenosta.

Kyllähän tämä osuu ja uppoaa, ja sitä paremmin, mitä vähemmän keskitytään villiin opiskelijaelämään (mitä minulla ei koskaan ollut) ja päästään vaikkapa lastenkasvatuksen kovaan ytimeen (mistä onkin jo enemmän kokemusta).

Paremmaksi vain käy edetessään tämä sarja. Erinomaista huumoria, joka on kehittynyt hyvään suuntaan.

Quite nice. The story had an interesting twist, and it's always fun to have a clever little girl overcome adversity. It just feels odd that Matilda is just five years old, considering my daughter is the same age – Matilda seems many years more mature, which just seems odd. It was a funny book, sure, and somewhat worth the classic status, but not one of my favourites in the end.

This collection of war stories was recently (and finally) translated in Finnish. It's a beautiful view into a madness of war. The 113 men tell their own stories, at the same time building up a larger story of the war and the company and basically all the men involved on the grassroots level of the war. This book deserves a place in the canon of war books.

Excellent book. A beautiful re-imagining of the Reconquista and El Cid. I particularly enjoyed the conflicts of interests for the main characters: all quite humane and willing to see other people as people, despite their religion, yet part of the larger tapestry of conflicting loyalties. Who are you loyal, in the end? Interesting, beautiful book. The only sad thing about this book – it was the last unread Kay book for me. No more unread Kays left for me, until he writes something new.

Mainio kokoelma fantasianovelleja. Praedorien maailma olikin minulle aikaisemmin vieras; tunnen sen vain nimeltä. Tämän luettuani tutustuisin mieluusti lisääkin, sen verran kiinnostava maailma se oli. Stalker-elementit ovat ilmeisiä ja mieluisia. Vaikka kirjoittajia oli paljon, maailma oli selvästi sisäistetty hyvin, sen verran yhtenäisiä tarinat olivat.

Hyvää viihdettähän tämä on, siinä missä edellinenkin osa sarjaa. Jatkan ilomielin seuraavaankin.

En ole suurensuuri novellikokoelmien ystävä, mutta näistä pikkutarinoista pidin kyllä. Jos joku tuntuikin vähän yhdentekevältä, heti seuraavassa oli taas sellainen käänne, joka veti mieltä sopivasti sykkyrälle. Eivätpä nämä oikeastaan edes novelleja ole, paitsi ehkä kokoelman lopettava Tytti, ennemmin pieniä kertomuksia, lyhyimmillään pari sivua. Juuri sopivan mittaisia!

Tyylikäs novellikokoelma, monta hienoa novellia. Mieleen jäivät erityisesti niminovelli “Joen jumala” ja kokoelman lopettanut “Marha”, kertomus ruumiinpesijästä.

Törkyhuumoria: Hugleikur Dagsson kohtaa Pertti Jarlan. Kuvitustyyli ja törkeyden aste on enemmän Dagssonia, sananmuunnokset ja puujalkailu taas enemmän Jarlaa. Ihan hauska pläjäys, mutta vähän tällaista kertakäyttöviihdettä.

Nice and generally well written popularisation of maths. The book does have a bit of a target group problem - the people most likely to read it probably won't learn much new from it. Strogatz covers well-known topics - quite well, sure, but anyone who has read any popular maths already knows what he's writing about. This book is best suited for people with interest in maths, but little knowledge of the topic.

Exciting thriller. Every chapter added more information to what actually happened. All in all, a well written book, on an interesting topic. Gillian Flynn has a good track record so far.

You can trust Thomas Bernhard... This book of memoirs on literature awards is brilliant. Bernhard didn't mind the money, but he hated all sorts of awards. The result? A rather entertaining book.

Full of action. Chen and Zhu Irzh must escort a representative of Heaven to visit Hell, and while they're in Hell, the Heaven decides to attack Hell. Lots of chaos ensues. The book was nice, but when the fourth book is translated in Finnish, I think I'm already ready to skip that.

Vauhdikas Ella-sarjan spin-off, pääosassa nyt Ellojen henkilögallerian vauhdikkain jäsen Pate. Runsaasti kuvitettu kirja on helppoa luettavaa, vielä vähän helpompaa kuin Ellat, joten tämän voi surutta lyödä lukutaitoisen eskarin tai ekaluokkalaisen käteen ihan itse luettavaksi. Mukana on kyllä Parvelan tyylille uskollisesti myös vähän aikuishuumoria, muutenkin tästä kyllä tunnistaa kirjoittajan vaivattomasti. Ihan on Parvelaa.

Interesting and an unusual setting. The book started really slow - it took me many days to read the first 350 or so pages. The rest of it – another 350 or so pages – I read in a day. Let's just say the book picked up pace at that point and became more interesting. This was an interesting, multi-layered mystery, and well-written.

Kiehtovia pieniä tarinoita. Satuformaatti on tuttu, mutta tarinat on tosiaan kerrottu enemmän aikuiseen tapaan. Kyllähän näistä perinteiset sadut tulevat mieleen, mukavalla nykyaikaisella päivityksellä.

Dynamic, explosive, fragmentary book. Not a novel, really, but a compilation of fragments, depicting the life in São Paulo, both the ugly and the beautiful sides. An interesting picture of a day in a megalopolis.

Hieno kollaasitekniikalla tehty kuvakirja siitä, miten joskus kannattaa sanoa kyllä. Tyylikäs kirja.

The adventures of Geralt continue. He's running after Ciri, with some curious company, and meanwhile a war is raging around him. This is, once again, a very good book.
