It was a nice addition to the backstory of what we're told in the first installment of The Lunar Chronicles saga. Though there are not much blanks to fill, it helped clear up some things that were implied or barely mentioned in Cinder .

For me, this was one of those rare cases where I liked the movie better than the book. In my opinion, the movie is perfection; when it premiered, I watched it over and over again for about a week or two. Is so cute and endearing, with enough drama to keep it interesting without becoming annoying, with lovely visuals and a lovely portrayal of the characters.

I don't know if it has anything to do with the fact that I watched the movie first and perhaps my expectations were different, but this was not what I was expecting after also hearing that the film was a loyal adaptation. So here's this review in form of list of what I liked and what I disliked about To All The Boys I've Loved Before.

-Chris. Perhaps I saw in her something of an old friendship I used to have, but I thought Christine is the worst friend ever. Yes, she was there throw sh*t to whomever wronged Lara Jean and lift her up when she was feeling bad, I'll give her that, but aside from that, she just took and took but almost never gave back. And when she did, it was mostly because her self-interests were involved. I felt like she's the kind of friend that constantly asks for favors or to cover for them and is mad if you don't come through, but you can barely count on them because they're always "busy" or doing something else.-Chris. Talvez vi en ella algo de una vieja amistad que solía tener, pero pensé que Christine es la peor amiga. Sí, ella estaba ahí para tirar m**rda a quién sea que le hiciera daño Lara Jean y animarla cuando se sentía mal, le daré eso, pero además de eso, sólo tomaba y tomaba pero casi nunca daba de vuelta. Nevertheless, there's no character growth from her in the entire book. From what we as readers know about her while still living at her parent's house and how she behaves when coming back home for the first time after leaving for college -even in the meantime when she's away-, she always comes across as doing things (solidary, charitable, selfless things) just to be better than anybody else and not necessarily for the solely purpose of benefiting others. And the whole situation of the "Recital Party" with her discovering Lara Jean's feelings for Josh and what happened between them while she was away and broken up with him, really made me mad. First of all, in that moment it was crystal clear that it wasn't Lara Jean's fault nor intention that Josh found out about her liking him before or that he kissed her, it was all Josh. Second of all, THEY WERE BROKEN UP; Margot herself was going on and on about him "needing to move on", even to him, so she wasn't in any right to demand anything from Josh even if she really didn't mean it. And lastly, if she really had her sister's best interest in mind, why the hell would she first believe what everybody else was saying instead of trusting her sister and what she was telling her?! (I also hated that Lara Jean begged so much for her forgiveness when she didn't do anything wrong). Overall, I didn't like Margot at all.-Margot. Es tan mezquina y llena de sí misma. Entiendo que carga con el peso de ser la hermana mayor: un modelo a seguir para sus hermanas más jóvenes, una figura materna, una estudiante modelo; y que todo eso puede eventualmente volverse demasiado para una adolescente, nadie es perfecto. Y toda la situación sobre la "Fiesta de Recital" con ella descubriendo los sentimientos de Lara Jean por Josh y lo que pasó entre ellos mientras ella no estaba y ya había terminado con él, realmente me hizo enojar. Primeramente, en ese momento estaba claro como el agua que no fue culpa ni intención de Lara Jean qye Josh se enterara de que a ella le gustaba anteriormente o de que él la besara, todo fue por Josh. En segundo lugar, HABIAN TERMINADO; Margot misma insistía en que él "tenía que superarlo", incluso a él, así que no tenía ningún derecho de demandar nada de Josh aunque realmente no lo dijera enserio. Y finalmente, si realmente tenía en mente lo mejor para su hermana, ¡¿por qué demonios primero creería lo que todo el mundo estaba diciendo de ella en lugar de confiar en su hermana y en lo que ella estaba diciendo?! He's honest, supportive while keeping things real, caring, respectful, funny, trustworthy... I could go on and on but I think this pretty much sums it up. He's just a great character.-Lucas Krapf. I liked very much that, contrary to the movie, there's mention of Kitty wanting a dog since the beginning of the book and all throughout the story until she gets one. But also, all that she does and all that she grows until she finally demonstrates that she's responsible enough to take care of a puppy. I thought it was a very nice touch and a good message on working for what you want.-La continuidad sobre el perro de Kitty. Me gustó mucho que, contratio a la película, se hace mención de que Kitty quiere un perro desde el inicio del libro y durante toda la historia hasta que obtiene uno. Pero ademáas, todo lo que ella hace y crece hasta que finalmente demuestra que es suficientemente responsable para cuidar de un cachorro. Creo que fue un muy buen toque y un buen mensaje sobre trabajar para conseguir lo que quieres.-Peter Kavinsky. Ok, so I previously said that he could be despicable at different points in the story. However, this ends up being a representation of Peter's character growth and development along the book, and it also shows something of how we, people, actually evolve during our lives, learning from our mistakes but sometimes falling back up until we reach the turning point. He starts up as the you'd-be-lucky-if-i-show-interest-in-you popular kid that every girl wants to date but he also is very cute, considered and doesn't let anybody's opinion affect him or bring him down; all his best qualities shine brighter by the end of the book but I feel like they also help Lara Jean grow and become a better version of herself, more fearless and with more self-esteem.-Peter Kavinsky. Ok, previamente dije que podía ser despreciable en diferentes puntos de la historia. Sin embargo, esto termina siendo una representación del crecimiento de Peter como personaje y su desarrollo a lo largo del libro, y también demuestra algo de como nosotros, como personas, realmente evolucionamos durante nuestras vidas, aprendiendo de nuestros errores pero algunas veces cayendo de nuevo hasta que alcanzamos el punto de quiebre. El empieza siendo el niño popular tipo "tendrías suerte si muestro interés en ti" con el que todas la chicas quieren salir pero también es dulce, considerado y no deja que la opinión de nadie lo afecte o haga sentir mal; todas sus mejores cualidades brillan con más intensidad hacia el final del libro pero siento que también ayudan a Lara Jean a crecer y convertirse en una mejor versión de sí misma, más atrevida y con mejor autoestma.-We see more of the Song family's heritage in the book. So this is directly a comparison to the movie. I did like very much that we got to see and live more of the Korean heritage in Lara Jean's life, which is part of the deep connection she and her family still have to her late mother. It's so interesting to know that their dad constantly tries to cook Korean food, or that they celebrate Korean holidays along with her mom's side of the family and that they (mostly) love it.-Vemos más del patrimonio de la familia Song en el libro. Esto es una comparación directa con la película. Me gustó mucho que pudimos ver y vivir más de la herencia Coreana en la vida de Lara Jean, que es parte de la conexión tan profunda que ella y su familian aun tienen con su madre difunta. Es muy interesante conocer cómo su papá constantemente trata de cocinar comida Coreana, o que celebran los días festivos Coreanos junto con su lado materno de la familia y que (en gran medida) les encanta.-Peter's reason for "getting together" with Lara Jean. This is a minor thing and also a directly a comparison to the movie: I liked that in the book, Peter states that he wants to do the whole show of being Lara Jean's fake boyfriend so he can prove to Gen and everyone else that he's over her and the she doesn't own him; contrary to what we see in the movie that is that he does it so Gen gets jealous and takes him back.-La razón de Peter para "salir" con Lara Jean. Esto es algo pequeño y también una comparación directa con la película: me gustó que en el libro, Peter dictamina que el quiere hacer todo el show de ser el novio falso de Lara Jean para probarle a Gen y a todos los demás que ya la superó y que ella no es su dueña; contrario a lo que vemos en la película que es que lo hace para darle celos a Gen y que regrese con él.
So that's it. In general, is a cute, very teenage-y read that, should I've read it some years earlier, perhaps I might have liked it better. Personally, I give it 2.5 stars rounded up to 3.

So this is directly a comparison to the movie. I did like very much that we got to see and live more of the Korean heritage in Lara Jean's life, which is part of the deep connection she and her family still have to her late mother. But Scarlet, who has lived with her and been raised by her since she was a toddler, knows better. She knows her better that anyone else, and knows that she wouldn't just up and leave her without saying a word. Or so she thought.

All the while we, as readers, also get to follow Cinder right from where we left her at her imprisonment in Emperor Kai's palace at the ending of the first book.

Marissa Meyer once again does a wonderful job taking elements from the original fairytale of Little Red Riding Hood and making them her own on this reimagined futuristic tale, and also mastering the art of directing an intermittent plot, giving us just the right amount of Scarlet or Cinder at a time until they inevitably meet, at the climax of the story. Not in one moment did I feel disengaged from the co-protagonist that I wasn't reading about in any given section of the book, or did I forget about the last think we learned about her.

Contrary to the first instalment, Scarlet keeps a mostly fast pace from the start and does not slow down, not even in the end, keeping the reader engaged and grasping for more after every turn of the page. Surprisingly, it doesn't become overwhelming or sloppy, as one might think (or at least that's how it was in my experience) and helps maintaining the hype for each revelation we are handed. Since this is also a retelling, of course is easy to guess most of the “twists” in the story, however, I think the manner in which they are presented to us keeps the excitement and the surprise element alive.

To my thinking, this is largely due to the fact that this story tells Narnia's birth (aka The Creation), which enables the interweaving of all these other biblical tales in the plot.

Conocemos un poco de su vida antes del General y todas sus vidas después de que se topó con él un día en Los Portales.
“En qué otra parte iba a ser si en Puebla todo pasaba en los portales: desde los noviazgos hasta la asesinatos, como si no hubiera otro lugar.”
Esta novela es de mis favoritas. Evoca en mí algo de nostalgia, pero también un sentimiento de complicidad con nuestra protagonista, cosa que hasta ahora sólo he encontrado en la pluma de la autora. La felicidad, tristeza, corajes y euforia de Catalina también se vuelven mías. Su impotencia, sus travesuras, su terquedad, su afán por ser libre en una época donde México aun luchaba entre lo que era (o sigue siendo) y quería ser: revolucionario, machista, comunista, potencia mundial, corrupto, patriota, religioso, cirquero.

Tampoco recuerdo alguna vez haberme puesto tan emocional con el final. Esta vez fue la excepción y sólo puedo sentir gratitud hacia la autora por regalarnos este tesoro.

Con este corto párrafo, Ángeles Mastretta nos da la bienvenida a su obra maestra “Arráncame la vida”, en donde Catalina nos lleva de la mano por su vida como esposa del General Asencio. Conocemos un poco de su vida antes del General y todas sus vidas después de que se topó con él un día en Los Portales.
“En qué otra parte iba a ser si en Puebla todo pasaba en los portales: desde los noviazgos hasta la asesinatos, como si no hubiera otro lugar.”
Esta novela es de mis favoritas. Evoca en mí algo de nostalgia, pero también un sentimiento de complicidad con nuestra protagonista, cosa que hasta ahora sólo he encontrado en la pluma de la autora. La felicidad, tristeza, corajes y euforia de Catalina también se vuelven mías. Su impotencia, sus travesuras, su terquedad, su afán por ser libre en una época donde México aun luchaba entre lo que era (o sigue siendo) y quería ser: revolucionario, machista, comunista, potencia mundial, corrupto, patriota, religioso, cirquero.
No tenía mucho tiempo desde la última vez que lo leí. Sin embargo siento que algo pasó en mi vida, sin saber qué, en los últimos dos años porque en esta relectura encontré una perspectiva nueva y completamente diferente ante muchas de las situaciones de vida a las que se enfrenta Catalina; la balanza ya no se inclinaba a dónde siempre se había inclinado anteriormente en ciertos esperados momentos. Y me encantó. Lo sentí como un libro nuevo en ocasiones y como un querido viejo amigo en otras.
