In a battery of events that will make a hero out of an illiterate private, a young Richard Sharpe poses as the enemy to bring down a ruthless Indian dictator backed by fearsome French troops.The year is 1799, and Richard Sharpe is just beginning his military career. An inexperienced young private in His Majesty's service, Sharpe becomes part of an expedition to India to push the ruthless Tippoo of Mysore from his throne and drive out his French allies. To penetrate the Tippoo's city and make contact with a Scottish spy being held prisoner there, Sharpe has to pose as a deserter. Success will make him a sergeant, but failure will turn him over to the Tippoo's brutal executioners — or, worse — his man-eating tigers. Picking his way through an exotic and alien world. Sharpe realizes that one slip will mean disaster. And when the furious British assault on the city finally begins, Sharpe must take up arms against his true comrades to preserve his false identity, risking death at their hands in order to avoid detection and thus to foil the Tippoo's well-set trap.

Prima avventura di “Richard Sharpe” e non si può non amare da subito questo bellissimo personaggio, costruito abilmente che si muove in un contesto storico tinteggiato straordinariamente e in maniera perfetta.
Dopo aver letto questo libro, Cornwell entra di diritto nell'Olimpo dei miei autori preferiti; già da me amatissimo per il ciclo di “Artù” e per il ciclo dell'“Arciere del Re”, con le avventure di Sharpe posso dire senza ombra di dubbio che questo scrittore appassiona il lettore in ogni prova letteraria.
Non mi ero accostato prima alle avventure di Sharpe, che sono forse le più vendute e conosciute di Cornwell perchè non troppo attratto dal periodo storico trattato e dall'ambientazione, l'India del 1799, pieno colonialismo inglese. Ma presto mentre proseguivo nella lettura mi sono dovuto ricredere perchè il libro ti prende subito dalla prima pagina e ti porta in un mondo di avventure basato su fatti e personaggi realmente esistiti.
Miraboli anche i personaggi di contorno, uno più di tutti: il sergente Obadiah Hakeswill, nemico odiato da Sharpe e anche da me lettore. Questa è la potenza della scrittura, farti amare od odiare dei personaggi che vivono solo sulla carta.
E' un peccato che qui in Italia le ristampe di tutta la serie di Sharpe vada così a rilento, ma si sa che questo è il paese dove i vari Moccia sono in testa alle classifiche.
