An enjoyable quick read that takes you right into early-Victorian atmosphere and shows the wide contrast between servants and rich. Sam and Rose were youthful lovers and separated when he went to London to seek his fortune at the age of 19. She had his baby and became a Christian, but he never returned; she lost faith he ever would. In the nine years since his departure, she spent her time supporting her child as a single mother.
Sam, on the other hand, has made money hand over fist. He has no joy in his life; only success. He doesn't believe God has any use for him and he thinks it was Rose who refused to wait for him.
Has a good Christian message as well.
Content: some innuendo; mentions of extramarital affairs, no details.
