Not sure what to make of this one. An interesting plot, but I didn't take to the heroine much. The other characters were good though and I'm intrigued by what has happened in the world enough to maybe read book 2 (as I've already bought it!). It would have to improve significantly to get me to read book 3 though.
I thoroughly enjoyed about 80% of this then (for me) it seemed o lose its way a bit, not mention needing a flow chart to keep track of all the characters and who they actually we're and wern't. It's more a 3.5 than a 3 and someone with a younger mind than me will undoubtedly find the end much less confusing!
A clever plot weaving fact and fiction to great effect and nice to see the Brigadier once again. I even quite liked the Doctor - who was on of my least favourite incarnations. The story ran at a good pace but left you a bit unsatisfied at the end, despite the multiple threads coming together very well.
This must be just me as most reviews are so good for this trilogy, but I really didn't like it much. It was just too much of a ‘And they all loved happily ever after' book. You didn't really feel any of the bad things that might have happened to Cassie ever would and the repairing the cities and reviving her parents was, I felt (and I accept this may just be me) silly.
I thought the spells were a bit ‘Oh we've got a spell for that' all the time and the HQ were pretty useless at their job. I liked the Winston and Nigel though!
Judging from the ratings I'd say I'm in a minority here but I don't really think this series is that good. It's not terrible or anything and I will read the 3rd one as I bought all three together and I'd like to know how it concludes, but it seems so slow, with many bits where I know exactly what will happen next and lots of dull stuff with Cassie.
I absolutely loved the spellslinger series, but this prequel isn't nearly as good. It's a fab idea and I was very excited to be able to read the origin of the main character, but it was very very slow, too depressing and bleak. The Spellslinger series was in a similar vein, but faster, less depressing and macabre and managed to stay a real page turner whereas by the end of this one I had to force myself not to skip bits. I'm not sure I will read the follow up, even though I've bought it!
