Part of me wanted to devour this book because it was so good I didn't want to stop reading. But I wanted to savor the experience and just get into the world, and it was totally worth it! I love this book, it's one of my favorites of this year. I have high hopes for the second!
If you're a fan of Brandon Sanderson, you'll probably like this book. It has foreshadowing, a large cast of beloved characters, tons of plot twists and a great plot.

I have mixed feelings about this book. I had high expectations, but I feel somehow disappointed. The plot is entertaining for sure. You don't have good guys in the story, all of them are bad and even evil. The initial problem grows bigger and bigger. The situations are ridiculous to an extent that become incredible, but the characters keep it going.
If it were just that, I'd give this book 5 stars. However, one thing that drove me crazy was the dumbness of some characters. They make some serious stupid decisions that made the reading experience exhausting and frustrating. Even though I know this probably was to add more humor to the story, to me it was unnecessary and annoying.
This book is soon to become a movie, and I have no idea how the adaptation will be. The plot is obviously not for everyone, so I'm quite skeptical about how this can be mainstream. But I really hope they change some of the characters' personalities, because I think that's the main flaw of this book.
I won this book through Goodreads and I thank to publishers for providing me this copy. My review isn't influenced by this fact.
This past few months I've been interested in reading books by international authors because they give me a new perspective of life. However, with this book I've realized even if two authors are from the same country, the reading experience is completely different. Land of Big Numbers shows the reality of Chinese culture, history and even traditions. I loved how the stories were intertwined, but also showed different aspects of the Chinese culture. In the past I've read other books by Chinese authors, but with this one specially I felt a sense of connection. The authors writing style and description were deep, and I felt like here writing spoke to me in a personal level. That's the appeal of this book. Even though I liked some stories more than others, I still recommend it because every story makes you pause and think. I definitely want to read more books by this author!
Ken Liu is one of my favorite authors, but this story doesn't show his abilities. If you've never read (or heard) any of his writing, I encourage you to read The Hidden Girl and Other Stories of The Paper Menagerie. He even has one major series. This story is definitely not his best, but thank goodness he has more books!

This clearly is a better graphic novel than White sand: the art is better, and the story has a better pace too. Although I love Sanderson's writing style - and I missed his prose here -, I still found this story enjoyable and full of surprises. It's not part of the Cosmere, but I can see the setting could become as big as the Cosmere.
If your looking for a fast paced story, this book isn't for you. The pace is slow, and focuses more in the inner world of the characters. Here there is no detective trying to find the killer, just a character who tries to make sense of everything while she plays detective. The ending was kinda disappointing, and it didn't leave me the same impression that The Silent Patient did. Still, it's a good book, and a promise of the author's next books.
